The fix-it job didn't work. It would have worked with a 1X1 rib, but not 2X2. And knitting down from the top piece didn't work either--I was half a stitch off and it showed.
So, I took the small ribbed piece and just started again. I'm 6 rows into the pattern and I'm good with the decision. I always suspected that a fix-it job would always bug me. I would stare at the front ribbing and know it wasn't quite right. I'm happy to start it again. Amazing how things look better once you cool down. That being said, I didn't frog the biggest piece--I'm not feeling that accommodating.

Sorry to hear the repair job didn't work they way you wanted it. I agree that it would have bothered you if you had left it, and you would never be able to enjoy the sweater. It is going to be such a nice cardi when it is done, I really am looking forward to seeing it (and trying to resist tempation to make that one myself)!

Decisions about what to do, when something goes wrong, are the hardest. Once the decision is made and we are on our way to fixing the problem (even if it is a lengthy frogging), there is a relief that comes and the joy of knitting returns. Sorry the quicker fix didn't work, but it's a neat trick to know "just in case".
Your little one is a sweetie! The time just flies by too quick. It seems only yesterday mine was that age and she will be 11 in less than a month.

Sorry to hear the "fix" didn't fix... would it have worked to just cut & frog the ribbing & do the ribbing over from the first row of knitted patterning down?
Doesn't matter now, as long as you're happy with the solution you chose! :)
BTW, Congrats on moving to typepad: it loads faster than blogspot!
