Ya, I knit it anyway
Jaywalker sock one is done.
And, it fits quite nicely. Notice I haven't grafted the toe. It's not because I avoid grafting, actually I kinda like it. No, it's because I'm worried I won't have enough yarn for the second sock, which I am not going to cast on until I can be sure.
I don't have a fancy scale like Claudia so I'm hoping the people at the post office won't think I'm completely crazy when I ask them to weigh the sock and yarn. (I've got two parcels to mail so it's not like I'm making a special trip). If not I'll see if The Bay sells scales. I won't actually buy one, I'll just try it out. I won't take blog pictures though. That would get me kicked out of the mall and sent for psychiatric assessment.

This is why I now only knit socks toe-up. Partly I like the challenge of knitting sock patterns backwards, but mostly it's because of the yarn-quantity thing--I just start at the toe with 50g ball #1 and cast off when I'm out of yarn.
Can you get more if you need it? Koigu is hard with that--it's that no-dye-lot thing.

It's a gorgeous sock!! I have a little tiny postal scale I got for a few bucks at an office supply store - you clip your item to be weighed to it and let it dangle. It works quite well. It looks sort of like this one from Amazon, but was cheaper:

Go to the Bay before the post office then, coz the posties are likely to call the nice men with the huggy coats on ya...

I'm with uberimma on the toe up solution. And that is one of the problems with the STR -- one pair from one skein means you have to weigh it to know where half-way is. I have kitchen scales (fancy digital ones) which I bought when I lived in the UK where you weigh dry ingredients for baking. They are very handy for cooking and I regularly get told off for the scales being in the living room next to the ball winder.

Your Jaywalker looks great! Isn't it a simple knit? I'm about half way through my first sock. I admire your courage for actually considering taking your yarn to the post office. I don't think I could do it.

I'm with JoVe. Kitchen scales do double duty and aren't that expensive. I just sit a yarn ball and wind off until I've split the skein in half. Still doesn't mean I've got enough yarn, but at least I know both socks have the same shot at completion.

I'm so sorry Steph! What's the yarn? Moss Agate? Email me your address and I'll have the STR people send you out another skein. No sweat. It might not match totally perfectly, but for the toes that might not matter to you. Or you could go with a contrast color for the toes. Whatever you decide let me know.
